21A: Reading Reflection No.2
The book I read for this reflection is "Thinking fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman
1.) The theme of this book was the power of thinking. It is the cognitive aspect of effective leaders and how they should stay patient but be micro aggressive as well. The book emphasized the importance of not only realizing the benefits of both thought processes, but as well as the balance between the two.
2.) This book was great to encourage my thoughts towards school and the beginning leg of my career. This class, at the end of the day, it is training your brain to think long term results of the business which is what is discussed in the slow thinking parts in the book.
3.) The book focuses on macro patience and micro aggressiveness. In other words things that happen on a regular basis and are the core activities you perform in a day require you to think fast, but looking at long term goals requires patience and dedication. You can apply this to an assignment by asking the students to evaluate what the day to day actions would be. Reflect on what the actual lifestyle would be like. In the same post ask how this reflects the long term profits of the product/service they mentioned.
4.) Going into this book, I didn't really know what it was going to be talking about. The title proposed a complete contradiction which encouraged me to pick it to read for this reflection. I think the biggest aha was realizing how to train your brain to not get focused just in day to day workload nor big picture goals. Get a safe balance and you'll be all set.
Hey Thomas, as always I love commenting on your blogs because they are always super clean and easy to read, therefore easy to digest as well! I am glad you chose to read Thinking Fast and Slow because out of the ones on the list, I was really considering reading it as well. I think the art of actually mastering thinking and taking over your own thoughts is not only so important in the business realm, but in your personal life. Life can be really hard sometimes so if you are able to control your own thoughts, take deep breathes, and change your outlook you will be very successful.
ReplyDeleteHey Thomas, I think your idea for the assignment would be interesting. I implemented that into my own assignment in some way by talking about taking care of yourself first instead of focusing on future business ideas therefore making sure you are healthy before attacking other goals. I will be checking this book out soon upon reading your post.
ReplyDeleteThomas, I like how you tied the book back to this class. Very impressive. This book seems interesting. Our main goal in college is to earn a degree, learn a skill set, and gain value experiences and friendships. Though this is our main goal, the only way to do so is by taking a few things at a time and dissecting it to get it right. We may fall and we may succeed. Either way, we are learning something and heading toward our goal at the end of our college experience.
